Trails Carolina - How Changing Seasons Spark Mood Disorder in Teens

If the change in season starts affecting the mood of your teen, it might be possible they are suffering from the seasonal affective disorder (SAD). People with this disorder usually experience mood swings and symptoms related to depression. This is a form of seasonal depression that often occurs in the fall and winter months when there is minimum sunlight and generally improves with the spring season. In the US, the January and February are the difficult months for people with SAD, while some people also experience this change in the summer.

The symptoms of SAD can be distressing and can also interfere with daily life and functioning. However, this disorder can be treated through different therapies and medication. Trails Carolina helps your teen to recover from this issue by letting them experience various therapies. This usually lasts about 40% of the year.

As the season change, people start to experience a shift in their circadian rhythm or biological internal clock that causes them to outcast with their daily routine. SAD is generally associated with a biochemical imbalance in the brain that is driven by minimum sunlight and shorter daylight hours. The people, who are living far from the equator, often have symptoms of SAD because of the fewer daylight hours in the winter season.

Treatment

There are a number of ways to treat SAD, including light therapy, wilderness therapy, conversational therapy, antidepressant medication or combination of all these. While the change in season will generally help in improving the symptoms but they can be quickly improved with treatment.

The exact causes of this disorder are unidentified, but the researchers found that the people with seasonal depression may have a serotonin imbalance that affects the mood. Their bodies produce an excessive amount of melatonin, a hormone, which regulates sleep, and not enough vitamin D.

Increased exposure to sunlight can be helpful for some people to improve the symptoms of SAD. Involving in activities like exercise, staying active, healthy eating, enough sleep can be helpful in taking care of health and wellness. Greatly Demanded Wilderness Therapy Program of Trails Carolina

Wilderness therapy program has been initiated by Trails Carolina towards the treatment of mental health problems. This program involves a three-step process that makes commencement with a cleansing phase and finishes with a phase, where the patient gets fully absorbed in the society.

The Exact Picture
Not genuinely is wilderness therapy a treatment by itself. Nobody can prove that just through this therapy, a patient can obtain the total cure for his mental illness or that it is a go-to treatment for any kind of behavioral problems. Rather, you can say, it is a process applicable in conjunction with other therapeutic treatments.

Role of Staff
Compassionate and patient staff is employed for wilderness therapy program dealing with individuals suffering from behavioral problems. In lieu of inducing change forcibly on the patient, they let in the natural consequences for gaining influence on the participant’s responses.

People view the staff members as their role models and not as authority figures who are there for the facilitation and hence, never force their ideas on patients. They encourage an environment for discussion where a patient can slowly open up and brings everything into a discussion with the staff.

Diverse Phases of Wilderness Therapy Process

Cleansing: It might not be enough to bring an individual to the wilderness for the generalization of what he or she learns in the wilderness to real-life. The practice of new social, emotional and practical skills is done in diverse settings with numerous skilled professionals, leading towards the removal of toxins gained from the society. In this phase, some of the activities taken up are inclusive of instruction of fundamental survival skills and self-care skills.

Personal Responsibility: Subsequent to the cleansing phase, the patients are then convinced to go for personal responsibility for their actions. When the wilderness background is set, the patients are compelled to consider the way of self-care in the face of unforeseen circumstances thrown up by nature. The outright notion behind this phase is the development of social skills that act as a key ingredient in the acquisition of the patient back to the society.

Transition and After Care:
Here the individuals have already undergone the realization of their potential and accountability and are now suitable to adjust back to their family. The staff is required to instruct the individuals on the diverse concepts that they have grasped and how they will be sticking to those concepts. Usually, this phase has the inclusion of one-on-one counseling and group sessions with peers. The staff also has to look at the diverse objectives that the patients have made for themselves and provide assistance to them in the development of a strategy for the accomplishment of those aspirations.

Conclusion
Participants have to undergo cleansing phase initially through a segment in which they become responsible to that part wherein they get instructed on basic life skills in the Trails Carolina wilderness therapy program.

trails carolina
When children are in their growing years, they sometimes develop an inferiority complex which leads them to have negative thoughts.

They are guided to think and stay positive, but the situation they are surrounded with makes it hard for them.

Every individual needs guidance to have a productive outlook in life, and we at Trails Carolina helps teens to accomplish this by helping them to overcome their repulsive thoughts. By enabling them to work on their interpersonal skills, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, etc. we help them increase their tendency towards creating a positive mindset.

You might be thinking, what is the reason for the negative thoughts? Or how can positivity lead to change?

To answer these questions you should first know the meaning of positive thinking.

It starts to confine the unconstructive thoughts and divert them into something constructive with a better approach.

For instance, you flunked in the test and certainly, your negative thoughts start empowering you towards making wrong decisions. The idea to overcome these thoughts is changing the way you think, and once you do this you’ll surely experience the world at a lighter pace.

We all are enthusiastic enough to make goals and resolutions for ourselves, but somehow due to situations, we are unable to cope-up and fulfill these goals. So, this indifferent attitude makes us lose hope and later attract negativity which makes us depressed. Remember, maintaining a positive attitude towards all lows and highs is vital in every aspect of life.

An optimistic approach to life will always lead you out of the darkest situations.

The teenagers are really sharp when it comes to technology, but sometimes due to bad company or situation, they misuse their skills. They want to achieve everything which makes them lose focus and have an aimless life. These things lead them to negativity and are influenced by the things that surround them. Teens are impulsive and these negative thoughts can have an adverse effect on their behavior, growth, and development.

Steps to start thinking positive

Positive thinking is not an easy process, as you can’t instantly wrap the things you have been doing your whole life. It takes time, effort and practice like any other job. It’s a process, you have to visualize yourself and then start developing new routines gradually. Here are some ways through which you can start your journey towards constructive thinking:

Focus on your strengths rather than your weakness.
Set a goal and make a proper plan to achieve it.
Be friends with people who motivate you to become better.
Get involved in a healthy routine like regular exercising or yoga.
Share it with your family or friends if you are stressed about something.

How to overcome negatives thoughts

One of the efficient ways to avoid these thoughts is to be involved in activities. At Trails Carolina, we have a diverse array of activities like yoga, stretching, outdoor exercises, soccer, etc. We have various therapies, including Equine, Wilderness, Individual, and Family Therapy.

Setting a goal and then planning steps to accomplish it will help you achieve immense satisfaction and will also help you to gain a positive approach towards life.
